Welcome to The Industry

The Industry is a series of short "fictional" stories told from the point of view of 6 main characters: Julia~ personal assistant,
Richard~agent, Christopher~producer, Stella~the actress, Kayla~showrunner, and Derek~the drirector

Julia has been Kayla's personal assistant for three years and she still won't read her work. Julia always goes above and beyond the call of duty, well except when American Idol starts, and when she has a date, or when her parents take her on vacation; but why does that matter? All TV shows break sometimes, don't they? She went to Northwestern to study drama, but was kicked out after one semester of mostly D's. She then moved to Los Angeles, went to Glendale Community College, took some writing classes at UCLA extension and decided to become a writer. She is surprisingly quite good at telling stories, now she just needs someone to read them.

Richard is a top Hollywood agent and reps many of today's hottest actors and actresses. Stella was recently added to his roster when she got an Oscar nod for her performance in last summer's sleep hit staring a certain Leonardo. She drives him crazy because she is under the impression that she is just as important as the other leading ladies she is competing with; and she is a drama queen. He really wants to break away from the agency his is currently with and has been for the last 15 years, or his young adulthood lost~as he refers to it~but they just merges with another big agency, so he is stuck.

Christopher is a good friend of Richards, a little known fact is that they went to Yale together and both studied drama, before Christopher branched off into finance and Richard, or Rick to his closer friends, moved out to Los Angeles to make it as an actor. Christopher now producers several television shows, mostly reality~if you can call them that~and feature films from the comfort of his home office in the Pacific Palisades. He does have an actual office on the main lot at Disney in Burbank, but who wants to do that drive everyday? That is why he has a team of producers, production managers, and assistants doing the grunt work for him.

Stella fell into acting when she was a teenager due to her unusual look. Her natural dark auburn hair and big blue eyes stand out in a crowd. She was lucky enough to get a Pepsi commercial which paid her way to New York where she went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts for a year before quitting because, "New Yorkers are mean" and moving back to Los Angeles where she studied at the Stella Adler school for performing arts, and took workshops around town between hanging out at every Starbucks on Ventura Blvd sipping non-fat-lattes hoping to be discovered. After many auditions she finally got the role of a lifetime, signed with Richard, her agent that "loves her more than anyone", and is now living in the Hollywood Hills with two huge dogs and a 5 bedroom 3,200 sq ft home that she herself gets lost in.

Kayla is a 38 year old woman who not only has one show on the air, that is always in the top five every week for one of the biggest networks on the air, she has a second show which is based off the first show. She created the first one one night over a few too many shots at the Blue Room in Burbank, pitched it to a man sitting next to her and didn't even remember giving him her card when he called her in the next week to hear more of what she had to say. She was at that bar because he second feature film was going straight to DVD and the TV show she was a staff writer on, had just let her go due to budget cuts. She had always had ideas about her own show, and was just ranting when her luck changed. She now holds 3 primetime Emmys and is nominated for a couple more.

Derek wants to be a feature director. Growing up in Los Angeles, he was around the industry his whole life and he always knew he wanted part of this fabulous life. He graduated at the top of his class from USC Film School and even won an award for his short film. He then spent two years at the Los Angeles Film school, which his parents did not pay for and after USC why should they? He was sure that he would get a great directing job, become the next Scorsese and pay off all the credit cards he used for those two years, but he didn't, and now he directs a hit TV series where the showrunner and him don't ever see in the same direction, and he doesn't even like the show that much. He just wants to get back into features, which is why he is also directing a project for Showtime, a mini series staring this newer pain in the ass actress that his friend Rick reps, and who he also made a promise to years ago when Rick let him crash on his couch for 7 months.
